Obama Movie Is Coming: Ill-Conceived Or Future Blockbuster?

The Obama movie news announced this week that would find a pre-presidency, Before Sunrise-styled Barack Obama and Michelle Robinson meeting up for the first time and going on their fabled first date has garnered quite a bit of social media pushback.

Entertainment Weekly has a bit more on the script, noting that it will be about “the day Michelle Robinson agreed to go out with a young Barack Obama, who was serving as an associate at Chicago law firm Sidley Austin.”

“Michelle, his younger boss, needed some convincing, but eventually agreed to date him, and the film will follow the date as the two visited Chicago’s Art Institute and went to see Do the Right Thing, among other stops throughout South Side.”

While some are showing excitement and offering casting recommendations for the project entitled Southside With You — Tika Sumpter has already been cast as Michelle while the search is on for a young President — others have lit up Twitter and Facebook with disgust and outrage.

No matter which side of the aisle you’re on, it’s pretty much a given that an Obama movie of this nature would have played better in his first term while support was still strong.

President Obama has become one of the most polarizing political figures of the modern era. He won two terms as president, but polling numbers since his reelection have seen considerable decline, resting at around 40 percent, and his signature domestic achievement — the Affordable Care Act (aka ObamaCare) — is widely unpopular.

CNN even notes that if the election were held today, his 2012 opponent Mitt Romney would win by around nine percentage points.
