The ‘It’ Color Of The Year is Marsala, Love It Or Hate It?

The “it” color of 2015 has been announced, and the winner is marsala.

Pantone announced their choice of the “it” color. Compiled from industry experts and fashion consultants, the “it” color often has a heavy influence in home design, fashion, beauty, and housewares, though some years the influence is greater than others.

Online opinion on the color announcement for the year has been dramatically split. Some viewers agreed with Pantone’s assessment of Marsala as “a naturally robust and earthy wine red,” and found it a pleasant change after years that have been more likely to evoke lilac and tangerine shades, others compared it to mold, rust, and menstrual blood.

Love it or hate it, the “it” color of 2015 has been named.

The Huffington Post offered a list of products that are already available in the rich wine shades that are tied in with Marsala. After all, there’s nothing inherently risky about the choice of adding a deep red wine color as an accent in your wardrobe.

“No matter your skin tone, the sophisticated hue is an excellent choice for those looking to spice up their look. Add just a touch of color with a pair of shoes or turn heads in a vibrant coat.”

According to the Huffington Post, cosmetics go-to Sephora has already announced plans for a limited edition palate tied to the chosen Marsala shade. The New York Daily News also offered some products currently available that meet the cut. After all, these earthy wine colors have been used in lipstick and hair color for years. According to Leatrice Eiseman, Pantone Color Institute’s executive director, one of the reasons for the choice was the ease of combining their “it” color with colors that people already own — beige, gray, black, and other neutral colors.

“It’s a color that you can mix with what you already own. You can add just a touch of it. That’s the intent and purpose. It is not the color that swallows the world.”

Marsala, as the chosen shade of 2015, also touches upon the influence that foodie culture is having on our modern world. While many people are familiar with this earthy wine shade of red, most people would call it just that — a wine red. Specifically choosing the name, Marsala evokes a delicious chicken dish, paired with a luscious red in a luxurious setting.

According to Eiseman, “It really does embody a certain amount of confidence and stability.”
