This Portland State University Student Fakes Out His Opponent With A ‘Good Game’ Handshake, Steals The Ball And Dunks It

A Portland State University basketball player pulled a fast one on his opponent Wednesday night, pretending to offer a handshake to an opponent but instead stealing the ball and taking it for a dunk.

With his team losing by 14 points as the closing seconds of the game ticked down, Portland State Vikings player Bryce White approached Portland University Pilots player Alec Wintering, who was idly dribbling the ball while waiting for the clock to run out.

What happened next was either an act of bad sportsmanship, stat-padding, or all-in-good-fun tomfoolery, depending on your point of view. With absolutely nothing to gain except two more points on his stats sheet for the game (his team was losing badly, after all), the Portland State University player extended his hand, as if to offer the customary “Good game!” handshake to his opponent. When Wintering repaid the gesture in kind, White stole the ball, ran to the opposite end of the court, and dunked the ball.

So unexpected – and pointless – was the dunk that the cameraman filming the action for TV didn’t even bother to follow the action, meaning that you don’t get to see the actual dunk in the viral video posted above. Fortunately, ESPN has found footage from another camera angle, and you can see it below.

From the video, it’s obvious that the fans didn’t think much of the Portland State University player’s “heroics,” considering that you can hear boos coming from the crowd. Bleacher Report writer Kyle Newport opines that it’s probably for the best that Portland State and Portland won’t be meeting on the basketball court for the rest of this season.

“The Vikings should be thankful they aren’t scheduled to face the Pilots again this season. If they were, Portland probably wouldn’t show any mercy.”

Do you think the Portland State University player’s handshake fake-out was poor sportsmanship, or was it all just part of the game?
