Sam Smith’s ‘Stay With Me’ Gets Nominated For Record of the Year

British singer Sam Smith has proved everyone right with his recent Grammy feats. The 22-year-old’s 2014 hit single “Stay With Me” has been nominated for record of the year. According to ABC News Online, “Stay With Me” is nominated for record of the year against hits like Iggy Azalea’s “Fancy,” Taylor Swift’s ”Shake It Off” and Meghan Trainor’s “All About That Bass.”

The Grammys, which will air on February 8, will award music in 83 categories. Friday morning on CBS, nominations in a few categories, including record of the year, were announced by Pharrell and Ed Sheeran.

The other categories announced were: best pop vocal album, which will see Smith competing with his debut, “In the Lonely Hour,” against albums from this year’s top acts like Ed Sheeran, Miley Cyrus, Ariana Grande, Katy Perry and Coldplay.

Another category that was announced was best urban contemporary album and Pharrell’s album “G I R L” was nominated. He is competing with Queen Bey’s self-titled fifth album, Chris Brown, Mali Music and Jhene Aiko.

Another category that was announced was country album: Dierks Bentley, Brandy Clark, Eric Church, Lee Ann Womack and Miranda Lambert (whose “Platinum” won album of the year at the Country Music Association Awards this year), were all nominated.

According to ABC News Online, Both “Happy” and John Legend’s “All of Me,” were released before Grammy eligibility, so the singers submitted live renditions of the songs so they could be considered for awards.

The BBC said the Recording Academy will announce the other nominees in the other categories for 57th annual Grammy Awards on Twitter throughout the day. The album of the year shortlist will be announced on a TV special – A Very Grammy Christmas when it aires on CBS in the U.S. tonight.

Sam Smith’s “In The Lonely Hour” was a top seller this year and is a likely candidate for this category. Other likely candiadtes for one of the biggest Grammy categories include the “Frozen” soundtrack, Beyonce’s self-titled album, Coldplay’s “Ghost Stories” and Sheeran’s “X.”

“I’m scared. It’s like Christmas Eve right now for me, I’d love my album to get that platform so I don’t know. Fingers crossed,” Smith said in an interview on Thursday.
