‘Doctor Who’ Christmas Special Spoilers: The Doctor And Santa’s ‘History’ And A ‘Scary’ Adventure

It’s December, which means it’s almost Christmas, which means it’s almost time for this year’s Doctor Who special, which will see Peter Capaldi’s Doctor cross paths with Nick Frost’s Santa Claus officially after that tease at the end of the Season 8 finale.

When he showed up in the TARDIS, Santa told the Doctor that things couldn’t end like they did for him and Clara, and fortunately, as the Inquisitr has previously reported, it doesn’t sound like they will because the latest update on Jenna Coleman’s status on the show is that she is going to be back for more than just the Christmas special since she has decided to stay for Season 9.

But first, the Doctor and Clara have to get through meeting Santa Claus and that adventure, and Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat has told Radio Times that while there is “a big lump of goodness” when it comes to the holiday stuff, it is also “actually a scary, tense and claustrophobic adventure,” and it sounds like quite the episode.

“It’s ‘The Thing’ meets ‘Miracle on 34th Street’ – the movie we’ve all been waiting for. It’s certainly the strangest bloody thing I’ve ever written.”

Moffat also took the opportunity to assure fans that “Santa is written in properly, in a science fiction way, into ‘Doctor Who,'” even though it may have seemed a bit “insane” when he showed up at the end of the season finale. Even if you’re a bit wary of what will result in the special because of Santa Claus’ involvement, he promised that you might very well enjoy it.

“I sense that the very people who think they might hate this won’t hate it at all. Of all the Christmas specials I’ve done, it’s the one most like the paradigm ‘Doctor Who’ episode.”

In a separate Radio Times interview, Nick Frost, whose name Moffat has called “perfect” for the role, teased that the Santa Claus he is portraying isn’t just jolly and has a past with the Doctor.

“For a start, it’s not all ‘Ho ho ho.’ My Santa is cross, mean and curt as well as cheery and funny. He’s got a little bit of Robert De Niro in ‘Mean Streets.’ And he has history with the Doctor: it’s not talked about explicitly but they have beef with each other from a way back.”

Digital Spy has posted a new BBC Christmas trailer that features clips from Doctor Who, Miranda, and Still Open All Hours’s holiday specials. As you can see below, Santa tells the Doctor that he’ll be “glad of his help.” When the Doctor asks Clara if she really believes in Santa, she tells him, “Right now, yeah. I think I do.”

The Doctor Who 2014 Christmas special airs on Christmas Day at 9 p.m. on BBC America.
