With Little-Known Characters Like Rick Flagg, Warner Bros. Wants Their Own ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy’ with ‘Suicide Squad’

Now that the cast has been announced for Suicide Squad, fans may be wondering exactly who some of the more obscure DC Comics characters are who will be prominently featured in the upcoming film. The characters include names such as Rick Flagg, who people have likely never heard of before. After the Hollywood Reporter first announced the roster of characters that will appear in Suicide Squad, it became clear that Warner Bros. is hoping to introduce moviegoers to lesser-known personalities like Marvel did in Guardians of the Galaxy.

Fans may instantly become curious to see that Tom Hardy will be taking on the role of a character named Rick Flagg. This may be confusing to some, considering that Hardy recently wore the mask of Bane as the popular Batman villain in The Dark Knight Rises. However, Suicide Squad exists outside of the Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy so viewers are asked to simply forget that Hardy already has a connection to the DC Comics universe as an entirely different character and now accept him as Rick Flagg.

Even after forgetting that Hardy was Bane, fans will undoubtedly still wonder: who exactly is Rick Flagg? In the comics, there has actually been three different characters named Rick Flagg. The first was one of the founding members of the original Suicide Squad team from World War II. His son and grandson, who were both given the same name, would later take their places as the new generations of Rick Flagg within the villainous team.

Providing fans with more details on who the Suicide Squad are, Vulture created a list of facts that detail some important information on the team lead by Rick Flagg. Basically, the Suicide Squad was formed by expendable villains forced into service by the U.S government with the original Rick Flagg being one of the its founding members.

Much like Marvel’s recent hit Guardians of the Galaxy, the Suicide Squad has been around in comic form for a long time and has seen several members join the team over time. However, the upcoming film will feature Jared Leto as the Joker even though the psychopathic clown has never actually been a member of the Suicide Squad in the comics. His addition to the team for the movie is likely to bring name recognition to the project since no one will know who characters like Rick Flagg are.

The Inquisitr reported that David Ayer has signed on to direct Suicide Squad while Zack Snyder, who will be directing the upcoming Justice League film, is attached as an executive producer. In addition to Tom Hardy joining as Rick Flagg and Leto’s role as the Joker, the movie has also cast Will Smith, Margot Robbie, Jai Courtney, and Cara Delevinge.

Suicide Squad is tentatively scheduled to release on August 5, 2015. It is unknown which version of Rick Flagg that Hardy will portray in the film at this time since there have been three Rick Flaggs in total.
