PlayStation Celebrates 20th Anniversary With Vintage-Style PS4

On December 3, 1994, Sony first released the original PlayStation in Japan. Now, for the console’s 20th anniversary, Sony announced that they will be releasing a limited edition PS4 that looks like its predecessor.

The vintage-style PS4 borrows its grey color from the first PlayStation, complete with the original PlayStation logo. The limited edition console will come bundled with a DualShock 4, a PlayStation camera, a special vertical stand and other accessories that are placed inside a 20th anniversary commemorative box.

According to Digital Spy, the vintage-looking PlayStation will be limited to only 12,300 units worldwide. The number is based on the original release date of the PlayStation, though the exact number should be 12,394. Each console comes with a badge that shows the unit number.

Andrew House from Sony Computer Entertainment talked about the console.

“The PlayStation 4 20th Anniversary Edition is a very special model that is reminiscent of the original PlayStation, which has inspired every other PlayStation platform launched in the past two decades. This limited edition PS4 offers a great sense of nostalgia to long-time PlayStation fans, while also providing a fresh experience to those who never picked up the original console.”

House further says that they created the anniversary edition to thank business partners, publishers, and fans who have showed their support the past two decades.

The 20th anniversary PlayStation 4 will be on sale on the PlayStation Experience event, which will be held in Las Vegas this coming weekend. Fans who attend will be able to hear new announcements as well as new games that will be released soon.

The console will not be sold through regular retail channels and details on where they can be bought will be announced soon. According to Metro UK, the grey PS4 will cost about £399 in the UK, which is more than the cost of a regular PS4 unit.

Aside from the limited edition console, Sony has also released a treat for those who already have a PS4. Users can download the latest firmware update from the PlayStation Store that changes the startup sound of the console to mimic the sound of the original PlayStation. The pack is available for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, and PS Vita users.
