‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ New Lightsaber Creates Controversy

The Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailer continues to be a topic of conversation everywhere and now some are questioning whether the new lightsaber design makes sense.

If you saw the most anticipated first teaser trailer for the J.J. Abrams blockbuster, you probably noticed the very cool looking lightsaber featured on the clip. The classic weapon was revealed by the mysterious figure dressed in all black, as he stands alone in the woods.

We don’t know who the man in black is and what he is doing there, but we were able to confirm that a previously leaked image was indeed a fact of the new production. This appears to be a villain in Star Wars: The Force Awakens and he (or she) is using the new lightsaber.

We also have to remember that Star Wars fans are among the hardest to please. Just remember the harsh criticism creator George Lucas was put through after he released the prequels.

In general, people don’t like change and want to see all their favorite characters behaving the same way and that extends to things such as the classic Star Wars lightsaber. Anyone who is a fan of the franchise, knows what the weapon looks like and to see something completely different in Abrams’ new trailer made fans take pause.

Now that we’ve had a few days to process the small details Disney shared in the teaser, some are questioning how this lightsaber could possibly be a good idea. Critics say that there is no way someone could safely use this intergalactic sword without getting their hand chopped off and Twitter has been the source of endless memes.

In past Star Wars films, the lightsaber has had a standard, pretty simple shape. Color has been used to identify the character using it. Luke Skywalker uses a green one, Master Jedi Mace Windu (Samuel L. Jackson) got a purple one, Count Dooku (Christopher Lee) had a special angled lightsaber, which was red in color.

Abrams is changing things up a bit and it makes sense to bring Star Wars into the 21st century. Aside from the new lightsaber, we saw a new kind of droid (which rolled on top of a soccer ball looking contraption), and new-looking stormtrooper costumes, as we saw on the teaser trailer.

As this new Star Wars trilogy takes shape, it will be impossible to keep everyone happy, however, in the end whether the new lightsaber design works or not, fans just want The Force Awakens to stay true to the originals, otherwise, why bring back the cast that made George Lucas a very successful franchise?
