‘Doctor Who’: BBC Says To ‘Watch The Christmas Episode To Find Out’ If Clara’s Leaving

Is Jenna Coleman staying or is she leaving Doctor Who? Could this year’s Christmas special be the last time fans see Clara as the Doctor’s companion? While last year saw fans wondering just how Matt Smith would exit to make way for Peter Capaldi to take over as the Doctor, this Christmas fans are wondering if Coleman is saying goodbye, but speculation is going to have to just continue.

As the Inquisitr has previously reported, it is beginning to look like Coleman is not leaving Doctor Who as many have suspected, and will be back to play Clara in Season 9. Radio Times reached out to BBC to try to find out what’s going on with her future on the show, but a spokesperson only teased that fans will have to wait to find out Clara’s fate.

“This is speculation so we won’t be commenting. Viewers will have to watch the Christmas episode to find out.”

Coleman has kept quiet about her future on Doctor Who, previously telling Radio Times that she’s “just been keeping [her] mouth firmly shut” when it comes to rumors of her departure.

“You get good at keeping secrets – this one in particular is quite difficult because you don’t want to be evasive, and you want to answer questions, but at the same time I just look back at different points of the show, where we had things like Oswin [her first appearance] in Asylum of the Daleks, when people didn’t know, and it was just better…. The show is better for the surprises. So that’s why we’re being very evasive. Very coy.”

According to rumors, if she had been leaving the show but had changed her mind and decided to stay, it is possible that the Christmas special script had to be rewritten so that Clara could continue to travel with the Doctor.

“In the original draft of the script, she became an old woman who then died with the Doctor at her side. But after they were rewritten, she will now be seen returning to the Tardis, hand in hand with the Doctor.”

The Guardian has argued that Coleman should stay because Doctor Who should explore what happens to Clara after the events of the Season 8 finale because “after a bereavement, life must go on.”

Other than rumors, not much has been revealed officially about the 2014 Doctor Who Christmas special, titled “Last Christmas,” written by showrunner Steven Moffat, for which CNET has posted a new photo showing Capaldi’s Doctor, Coleman’s Clara, Nick Frost’s Santa Claus, and elves played by Dan Starkey (who also plays Strax) and Nathan McMullen.
