‘Blade Runner 2’ Begins Production In 2015 Without Ridley Scott

Blade Runner 2 is going to start production sometime in 2015. That’s the good news. The bad news is that despite rumors to the contrary earlier this year, it doesn’t appear that Ridley Scott is going to be directing.

More good news is that Scott will indeed be attached to Blade Runner 2, even if it’s not from the same chair that he worked from on the original Blade Runner. Talking to Variety, the director also shed some light on just when Harrison Ford will make his appearance in the film.

Scott developed the sequel for Blade Runner along with Hampton Fancher, the other writer for the original. This means Blade Runner 2 will hopefully look and feel like the original. Of course, not everything will be the same. Scott said that while Harrison Ford will absolutely be part of the Blade Runner sequel, he won’t have near the central role he did in the first.

Scott says he and Fancher talked quite a bit about how the newest movie will stay true to the Phillip K. Dick story.

“We talked at length about what it could be, and came up with a pretty strong three-act storyline, and it all makes sense in terms of how it relates to the first one,” he said.

While Scott still wouldn’t say exactly how the movie is going to unfold, he did say quite a bit of the story would involve trying to find Deckard. With this being the plot, Harrison Ford will come into the story of Blade Runner 2 in the third act.

Ridley Scott hasn’t said exactly when the film is going to start shooting, but it does appear it will indeed begin production in 2015. The director, who will actually be a producer for Blade Runner’s sequel, hasn’t really talked about how many people have been cast for their roles yet either.

There isn’t a director attached to the project yet, and as of now, it doesn’t appear the picture is very close to announcing one. That seems to hint that the production will be starting later in 2015 than the spring. It’s possible that Scott might find someone who is familiar enough with the work that he could take the helm quickly, but something of this scale won’t be moving at lightning speed.

While the Phillip K. Dick novel’s adaptation wasn’t all that popular when it was first released, it became a cult hit. It stands to reason Blade Runner 2 is going to build on that popularity.
