Kelly Reilly Joins Cast for Upcoming Season of ‘True Detective’

After weeks of speculation, Kelly Reilly has been confirmed as joining the cast of the second season of True Detective. HBO made the announcement just yesterday. Reilly will be joining an all star cast made up of Vince Vaughn, Colin Farrell, and the also recently confirmed Rachel McAdams and Taylor Kitsch.

HBO has announced that season two “centers on three police officers and a career criminal who must navigate a web of conspiracy in the aftermath of a murder.” Nic Pizzolatto’s drama series airing on HBO will have a total of eight episodes. Justin Lin, known for his work in The Fast and the Furious, is confirmed to direct the first two episodes of this season.

Reilly will be playing opposite some of the best of the business. HBO announced that Vince Vaughn will be playing Frank Semyon, Reilly’s character’s husband, who is a “career criminal in danger of losing his empire…by the murder of a business partner.” The three police officers will be played by Colin Farrell, Rachel McAdams, and the Friday Nights Lights star Taylor Kitsch, each with their own stories and pasts to deal with as the story progresses.

Reilly is best known for her roles in Sherlock Holmes starring Robert Downey, Jr., Flight, and the horror film Eden Lake. Reilly is the winner of multiple awards for her work in television and movies. Many look forward to her interpretation of her character, Jordan Semyon, the wife of Frank, who is “a former D-list actress who is a full partner in his enterprises and ambitions.”

The first season of True Detective starring such big name stars as Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson was wildly successful earning 12 Emmy nominations of which the show won five. It followed the story of two detectives, Harrelson and McConaughey, and “their supposed solving of a bizarre ritualistic murder in 1995.” With such success, some critics are wondering if this cast and production crew can create the same effects, but many are just excited to have such a great cast, including Reilly, on board.

When writing the second season, Pizzolatto started to take into consideration much of the criticism he had received from the first season. At which point, he promptly stopped and, according to the Hollywood Reporter, “ditched whole characters.” He responded by saying, “I don’t think you can create effectively toward expectations.” Let’s hope these actors live up to his expectations, though.

While Reilly and the cast are currently filming the second season right now in California, according to the Wall Street Journal, there is “no set time table” but that it should be set to air at some point in 2015. Fans of the first season wait with bated breath to see Kelly Reilly and the rest of the cast work their magic create the same haunting effect the first season had.
