From $1 to an eco-tourist showpiece


So what do you do with a 172 acre dilapidated and decaying island that you bought from the federal government?

Well if you are New York State and the piece of land is Governor’s Island you hire the design firms West8, Scofido + Renfro and Rogers Marvel Architects to create a showpiece of an eco-park. Intended to be completed by 2012 the park will incorporates a slew of interesting; and downright cool, environmentally friendly features.

Part of the park’s features will be a Marine Exploration Center that will consist of off-shore programmed structures which will include as coastal plant greenhouse, marine life tank, a vertical reef and two restaurants. One of the more interesting features will be the mode of transportation

Last but certainly not least, complimentary wood bicycles —designed by the architects themselves—will be provided for visitors to cruise the winding paths of the park. Attractions accessible by bike will include the tidal basin, the planned 10,000 seat amphitheater, and a perimeter promenade with killer views of the city and its legendary landmarks.
