Gwyneth Paltrow, Martha Stewart Feud Really Takes The Cake: Goop Attacks Via Recipe

Gwyneth Paltrow and Martha Stewart’s ongoing feud isn’t just vicious — it’s also pretty darn delicious.

The lifestyle gurus have started waging war via their recipes, so pretty soon you might be able to thank their food feud for helping you cook up a gourmet Thanksgiving feast. According to People magazine, Gwyneth Paltrow recently took a jab at her rival by publishing a recipe for a tasty little dish called “jailbird cake” on her goop website.

People points out that the recipe is probably a reference to Martha Stewart’s short stint in prison for insider trading. The domestic diva fired the first shots at Gwyneth Paltrow in this culinary combat last month when she served up a piece about pies in the pages of Martha Stewart Living. It was titled “Conscious Coupling,” an obvious reference to Gwyneth Paltrow’s “conscious uncoupling.” These were the much-mocked words that Gwyneth used to describe her split from Coldplay singer Chris Martin.

Martha Stewart’s article described the “marriage” of pie fillings and crusts.

“Every Thanksgiving table should be blessed with the presence of a long-married pair who bring out the best in each other, are completely enamored despite their differences, and leave every other guest thinking, I’ll have what they’re having. Our holiday pies honor such partnerships, each spotlighting the perfect marriage of crust and filling so there’s a pleasant mix of textures and flavors in every bite. No matter how you slice these irresistible desserts, there is a whole lot to love.”

Gwnyeth Paltrow’s no-bake jailbird cake recipe didn’t include an eloquent description — it consisted only of a short list of ingredients and instructions. Martha would probably scoff at the simplicity of layering chocolate wafers and whipped cream.

Jailbird Cake

A source close to Paltrow told People that the goop recipe was definitely meant to be a dig at Stewart.

“The folks at goop know how to have some fun, too. If Martha served up the appetizer, the Jailbird Cake is just desserts.”

Martha Stewart hasn’t just attacked Gwyneth with pie posts. According to the New York Post, she had some not-so-good things to say about Paltrow during her September interview with Net-a-Porter.

“She just needs to be quiet. She’s a movie star. If she were confident in her acting, she wouldn’t be trying to be Martha Stewart.”

According to Fortune, Paltrow responded to Stewart’s bitter words last month at the Most Powerful Women Summit. First she joked about her popularity.

“No one has ever said anything bad about me before, so I’m shocked and devastated. I’ll try to recover.”

She then proceeded to try to get under Martha’s skin by explaining why she finds the lifestyle guru’s criticism flattering.

“If I’m really honest, I’m so psyched that she sees us as competition. I really am.”

Gwyneth also made a move that probably made Martha even grumpier when she hired Lisa Gersh, the former CEO of Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia.

Now that Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Martin are back together, it will be interesting to see if Martha fires back at Gwyneth with a recipe for Catching Fire cookies.

Do you think Gwyneth Paltrow will emerge as the winner of this food fight, or did Martha Stewart’s time in the clink made her a tough cookie who is perfectly capable of taking down the goop guru?
