Walmart Changes Price Matching Policy Following $90 PlayStation 4 Scam

Less than honest customers of Walmart who scammed the company to sell PlayStation 4’s at a $90 price point have forced the company’s hand in changing the online price matching policy.

The Inquisitr reported the promotion was abused by savvy Amazon members who had a selling account. By creating a product page for a $90 PlayStation 4 and simply printing out the screen, they would bring the official-looking printout to their local Walmart. The cashiers, who were none the wiser, started selling the $400 console for a mere $90, less than a quarter of the original MSRP for the next generation console.

The original policy of Walmart stated, “We’re committed to providing low prices every day, on everything. So if you find a current lower online price from an online retailer on an identical, in-stock product, tell us and we’ll match it.”

Now that the scam has been brought to light, Walmart announced that they are amending the price matching service following the PlayStation 4 scam.

The updated pricing policy, which can be read here, now lists a few more line items that should make another scam like the one with the PlayStation 4 harder to accomplish.

  • The prices on Walmart.com and online retailers will be matched
  • Our customers must provide the online price and retailer
  • The item must be currently in-stock at the online retailer’s website at the time the request for the price match is made
  • The item must be sold and fulfilled by online retailers listed below
  • We reserve the right to verify the price of the identical, in-stock item at the online retailer’s website (i.e., size, model, quantity, brand, color)
  • We will limit quantities to one-per-customer, per item, per day

The online retailers that are listed include some of the bigger names in online commerce, such as Amazon, BestBuy, Target, and so on.

Walmart released a statement, detailing their reaction to the PlayStation 4 scam. They stand behind the program as it is making a “meaningful difference” for people who want to feel they are indeed getting the best price possible.

“At the same time, we can’t tolerate fraud or attempts to trick our cashiers. This kind of activity is unfair to the millions of customers who count on us every day for honest value. With this in mind, we’ve updated our policy to clarify that we will match prices from Walmart.com and 30 major online retailers, but we won’t honor prices from marketplace vendors, third-party sellers, auction sites or sites requiring memberships.”

With no more $90 PlayStation 4’s available at Walmart, gamers will have to pay the full $400 for the best selling console of this generation.
