Israel Refuses To Cooperate With The United Nations, Boycotts UN Probe

Over the past month, the United Nations (UN) has been intimately engaged in the inner workings and politics of the State of Israel. The Inquisitr has kept up with the latest reports on the UN’s involvement with Israel either directly with the state or with actions that indirectly effect the state. In said case, both the United Kingdom (UK) and Sweden have cast their UN votes in favor of a Palestinian State, something Israel is against. Those two countries may not be alone in their decision soon as other European Union (EU) countries may follow unless the United States continues peace talks with Israel.

Now there is news that the UN wants to investigate Israel because of the war they had with Gaza. Israel however has announced that they will not cooperate with the UN. As a result, Israel is boycotting the UN’s Gaza probe.

According to an article by the Times of Israel, it reports that Israel’s Foreign Ministry announced last Wednesday that it would not cooperate with the UN inquiry into the Gaza conflict that happened over the summer. Because of this, Israel rejected an entry request issued by three members of the UN investigative committee seeking to gather evidence, which left them stranded in Amman. It should also be recognized that both Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Foreign Minister Avigdor Liberman back the decision to not cooperate. Channel 2 did report that the UN committee has been in Jordan for several days, patiently waiting for Israel to grant them permission to cross the border. They are reportedly using the waiting time to interview “witnesses” there.

From what the Foreign Ministry states, the reason for the UN Gaza probe is because of the UN Human Rights Council’s “obsessive hostility” towards Israel along with a “one-sided mandating.” They also mentioned William Schabas’ anti-Israel statements as a factor, too.

“While Hamas fired thousands of rockets toward Israel, the UN Human Rights Council decided it would determine in advance Israel’s ‘guilt’ and set up an investigative committee to serve as a rubber stamp to its known positions.”

Foreign Ministry spokesman, Emmanuel Nahshon detailed in his statement on why Israel is not going through with the UN probe.

“Since the Schabas commission is not an inquiry but a commission that gives its conclusions in advance, Israel will not cooperate with the UN Commission on Human Rights over the last conflict with Hamas.”

The Jewish Daily Forward also reported on Israel’s decision to boycott the probe in which they provide statements from William Schabas and other UN officials. Apparently Schabas stated that he had to put aside “things that have gone in the past.”

“I do not hate Israel and do not want to engage in a debate regarding my previous positions on Israel. I have had positions in the past concerning Palestine and Israel and they have nothing to do with my mission now. I will put my opinions aside during the investigation and they will have no bearing on it.”

Now that you’ve read the news on Israel’s decision not to cooperate with the UN, what are you views on it? Do you think that Israel is boycotting the probe to protect its citizens and state or do you think they are hiding something?
