‘Watch Dogs’ For Wii U Leaves Bad Blood DLC Behind

Watch Dogs for Wii U launches today in North America giving owners of the struggling Nintendo console a chance to experience a portion of what the PlayStation, Xbox and PC gamers have had for the last 6 months. The Inquistr has reported on the success of the game for Ubisoft as it has sold upwards of 8 million copies to date. However, the release of Watch Dogs for Wii U has not generated a great deal of fanfare from developer and publisher Ubisoft. The official website for the game has virtually no news or updates regarding the launch of the game and what the Wii U version adds and takes away.

Ubisoft has been a champion of new hardware, especially the Nintendo Wii, leading to some interesting titles for the previous console platform from Nintendo. Titles such as No More Heroes, Red Steel and even Splinter Cell: Double Agent were bold experiments in the new realm of motion control gaming. When the Wii U launched, Ubisoft was ready to support the Wii U’s Game Pad and second screen gaming with Zombi U. The game had a horrible showing. The showing was bad enough that Ubisoft withheld development of DLC for games that were already coming to the platform such as Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag which never received the Freedom Cry DLC. Other games were canceled all together or no longer exclusive to the Wii U such as Rayman: Legends. This new hesitation toward the struggling Wii U is shown yet again with Watch Dogs.

Watch Dogs for Wii U was delayed, according to Eurogamer, to give the developer time to concentrate on polishing up the release for the more powerful consoles and PC. This would let the development team concentrate all their efforts on making sure the Wii U received their full attention. The result is that Watch Dogs is launching with an interactive map for the Wii U’s Game Pad and no plans for any DLC beyond the initial offering.

According to GameSpot the DLC for Watch Dogs on the Wii U include the following two packs:

  • Conspiracy DLC
  • Access Granted DLC

The Conspiracy DLC is an AR in-game mission where the player must hunt down AI enemies. The Access Granted DLC pack is a collection of all the pre-order bonus content across all the versions of the game which includes items such as additional skills, outfits and a few new contract missions. Notably absent is the Bad Blood DLC which was made available on all other platforms.

The Wii U may be part of the 8th generation of consoles, but it sits in an awkward place. It is more powerful than the PS3 and Xbox 360 but not as powerful as the PS4 and Xbox One. Combined with the lack of sales for the console and Nintendo’s decidedly pathetic track record with third party publishers, it is not surprising to see games pared down for the Wii U owners who may have opted to purchase the Wii U as their only console for the near future. While Watch Dogs for the Wii U is a welcome addition to other “hard core” games such as Deus Ex: Human Revolution and Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag for the console, it gives those gamers a lesser experience which isn’t good for anyone.
