SunTrust Bank Adds Support For Apple Pay!

SunTrust bank has become the latest player to enter the Apple Pay bandwagon, with the bank announcing that it will adopt the new mobile payment system from Apple. According to MacRumors, customers with a SunTrust credit or debit card will soon be able to add their card to Apple Pay and use it to make purchases at participating retailers.

The addition of SunTrust to the Apple Pay comes close on the heels of Bi-Lo, Harveys, and Winn-Dixie grocery stores adopting the system. Winn-Dixie and Bi-Lo is expected to go live with Apple Pay in the weeks to come. This is in spite of the fact that they were not in the initial list of brands that were included in the “coming later this year” list initially released by Apple. In the weeks to come, customers who shop at any of the supermarkets of Bi-Lo, Winn-Dixie and Harveys will be able to use their iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus handsets to pay for their items at the time of check out.

In a press release announcing support for Apple’s newest mobile payment system, SunTrust bank’s client segments and solutions executive Beverly Ladley made a statement.

“We are constantly looking for ways to help improve the financial well-being of our clients and part of that is offering solutions that make banking simpler, more convenient and safer. The addition of Apple Pay provides SunTrust clients with an innovative, secure option to make purchases.”

The press release from SunTrust also mentions the safety of the system.

“When clients use Apple Pay in a store, restaurant or other merchant, cashiers will no longer see their name, credit card number or security code, helping to reduce the potential for fraud. SunTrust clients have Zero Liability protection when making payments with SunTrust credit or debit cards through Apple Pay. If they use a rewards card, they’ll continue to earn with every qualifying purchase made through Apple Pay.”

It’s been just a few weeks since Apple debuted its brand new mobile payment system. It is a part of iOS 8.1 and, like many other Apple products, it has seen a strong adoption rate within just a month of its debut. In fact, within the first month, 50 percent of recent tap to pay purchases at McDonald’s were processed through Apple Pay, according to a New York Times report. The United States currently has around 40 retailers who have adopted the new payment system. With the addition of SunTrust to the list of institutions that have started supporting it, it is likely that the number is likely to rise in the days to come.
