Amy Adams Talks About Her ‘Turning 40 Meltdown’

Amy Adams is an accomplished actress that has Academy Award nominations under her belt, and is looking at a very promising season this year. That said, the Big Eyes star insists that she’s still a normal person who deals with her fair share of freak outs. Turning 40-years-old was one of them.

This month, Adams graces the cover of Vogue, and gets personal with the magazine to discuss how she doesn’t have it all together. Getting started in the industry was a complete nightmare for the American Hustle actress.

It wasn’t just auditioning. According to Adams, she “was able to do everything from day player to guest star to small parts in movies. I felt a lot of pressure, but I just wasn’t able to get there in the audition room. Or even in meetings. My squirreliness would come out, and people wouldn’t feel confident.”

Although her career is on the upswing, that doesn’t mean she has it all together. In fact, Amy admits that usually she doesn’t have it all together, or at least not in the way she expected to when she was younger.

“I was like, ‘I’m 40 and I still care what people think of me; I still don’t do laundry so I’m always out of things; I’m just not a grown-up at all.”

She continued, “I had this expectation that I would be by this age. It wasn’t, ‘Oh, I’m getting old and I’m going to lose something vibrant about myself.’ It was more that I was just… so disappointed with myself.”

Even though Amy is quick to say she’s a worry wart, she does have at least some perspective of her life after turning 40.

“Every time I get stressed out or anxious, I say to myself, Just live and love. Feel love. I think that’s what I took away from my turning-40 meltdown.”

Next up, Adams is promoting her new Tim Burton movie Big Eyes, which she co-stars alongside Christoph Waltz. The film is a true story about Margaret Keane, an artist whose husband, Walter Keane, claimed her work as his own in the 1950s and 1960s.
