Alyson Hannigan Will Guest Star In ‘The McCarthys’ Christmas Episode

If you’ve missed seeing Alyson Hannigan on your television weekly since the end of How I Met Your Mother (no matter how you felt about the finale), you’ll like this news. She will be back on CBS, at least for one half hour.

Entertainment Weekly has reported that Alyson Hannigan will be guest starring on one of the new comedies this fall, The McCarthys, and has revealed a few details about her character and how she is connected to the McCarthys. When Hannigan appears in the Christmas-themed episode, which will air on Thursday, December 18, she will be playing Marjorie (Laurie Metcalf) and Arthur’s (Jack McGee) upstairs tenant, Pam. She gets to witness the McCarthy family’s Christmas plans.

“[Pam] is sweet, but fresh from a break-up and broken-hearted. In order to cheer her up, Marjorie invites Pam to join the family for Christmas Eve, however, as Pam watches the McCarthys play their very competitive annual gift-exchange swap, she is shocked by how the family treats each other.”

Alyson Hannigan has had a few memorable roles over the years, from Willow in Buffy the Vampire Slayer to Lily Aldrin on How I Met Your Mother, as well as Michelle in the American Pie movies.

The McCarthys star Tyler Ritter recently teased this upcoming episode with a photo of himself with the caption, “I wonder if this sweater means we’re shooting the X-Mas episode?” on Twitter.

The comedy series, which the Inquisitr previously reported is “likely” to be cancelled, revolves around the close-knit family in Boston, and Entertainment Tonight spoke to Ritter about how close the cast has gotten.

“Anytime you get the six of us together, we’re going to have a blast. The chemistry has been there from day one.”

This upcoming Christmas episode sounds like it should be fun, and Alyson Hannigan’s character Pam should get quite the introduction to how “loud, opinionated,” and “obnoxious” the family can be, as McGee and Ritter told ET. McGee added that that’s just how it is in circumstances like this.

“There’s lightness made about it. The poking fun in an Irish family is part of the deal, especially when there’s a lot of you. Everybody’s looking for their slot.”

ET also spoke to Ritter about his father’s legacy, and whether carrying that is something he thinks about in his life and with his career.

“I don’t consciously say [to myself], what would my dad do in this situation, or how would he look doing something. I do think just naturally I bring some of his elements to the table, without even trying.”

That includes never being late to an audition.

“You have to put in the time. It looks like a lot of fun but you only get to have fun when you put in the work and you’re prepared,” he explained.

The McCarthys airs Thursdays at 8:30 p.m. on CBS. Are you looking forward to seeing Alyson Hannigan on TV again?
