Taylor Swift Has Iggy Azalea’s Back Against Critics

Everywhere you turn these days, it seems Iggy Azalea has beef with someone. So it was actually refreshing to hear Taylor Swift defend the much maligned female rapper in a new interview with Time magazine.

In the article, Swift called the evaluation of the validity of female artists as “unfair,” citing both Azalea and her beef partner Nicki Minaj as two examples of artists questioned on whether they write their own songs. “It’s a little discouraging that females have to work so much harder to prove that they do their own things,” Taylor said. Swift continued:

“We all know it’s a feminist issue. My friend Ed [Sheeran], no one questions whether he writes everything. In the beginning, I liked to think that we were all on the same playing field. And then it became pretty obvious to me that when you have people sort of questioning the validity of a female songwriter, or making it seem like it’s somehow unacceptable to write songs about your real emotions—that it somehow makes you irrational and overemotional—seeing that over the years changed my view. It’s a little discouraging that females have to work so much harder to prove that they do their own things. I see Nicki Minaj and Iggy Azalea having to prove that they write their own raps or their own lyrics, and it makes me sad, because they shouldn’t have to justify it.”

Taylor also mentioned how she’d love to share the stage with both Azalea and Minaj – a long shot at best to happen in real life. The pair infamously got into a heated internet beef following comments Nicki made at the BET Awards earlier in the year. As reported by Inquistr, Minaj hinted at the rumor that Iggy’s lyrics were ghost written by another artist when she told the audience, “What I want the world to know about Nicki Minaj is, that when you hear Nicki Minaj spit, Nicki Minaj wrote it.” She then gestured in a way that seemed like she was locking her mouth and mugged at the audience. As the audience cheered, she said, “No, no, no, no, no shade.”

Azalea meanwhile could care less. She’s too busy releasing new music to concern herself with the internet rumors. According to Rap-Up, Iggy teased another track off her album Reclassified. For the song “Heavy Crown,” the Austrailian rapper teamed up with British pop sensation Ellie Goulding. The track was previously debuted in the action-packed trailer for Kingsman: The Secret Service.
