‘Harry Potter’ Fans Raising Money For New Fan Movie Not Made By Americans

What does it take to become a true Harry Potter fan? Making a fan film to answer unanswered questions left from the books and movies, of course.

Cameron Cairnduff, a Manchester student at Futureworks School of Media in Salford, is trying to raise £40,000, or about $63,500, to make his dream of continuing Harry Potter’s legacy through a fan film, states BBC News.

The film driven with inspiration from the Harry Potter books is being funded through a Kickstarter campaign throughout November. Cairnduff hopes to pull enough money together to start filming at the start of 2015.

Harry Potter Books
The new fan film is inspired by the well-known Harry Potter book series by JK Rowling.

Cairnduff explained he didn’t want to “rip off Harry Potter” but felt the need to explore the Harry Potter stories more.

The movie, Mudblood and the Book of Spells, would tell a story about “muggle-born wizards,” or wizards who were not born with magical powers. The original script focuses on one particular defiant wizard who was expelled from Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, according to The Telegraph.

Harry Potter fans were able to help sculpt the script through the use of internet forums like Pottermore and Mugglenet.

Although other fan films have already been made based on the Harry Potter movies and books, Cairnduff believes the fan films were nothing less than acceptable.

“We want to make something people will want to watch and we want to create our own opportunities. There are no good Harry Potter fan films – they’re all American and have low production values.”

Cairnduff already sent a “piece of parchment” to JK Rowling, the author of the Harry Potter book series, but he has received no word from her in response as of yet.

More than 200 actors auditioned for parts in the film, and about 100 were cast. Bretten Lord, an award-winning actor, will play Charlie, the main character in the film. Forbes KB, an actor who played Lorren in Game of Thrones, will also star in the Harry Potter fan film.

Once the film inspired by Harry Potter is finished, Cairnduff plans to premiere the movie at film festivals in Manchester and London near the end of 2015.
