‘Doctor Who’ Season 8 Ends With The Doctor And Clara Parting Ways: Is It Permanent?

Doctor Who season 8 ended with “Death in Heaven,” and the end of the finale saw both the Doctor and Clara lying to one another as they said their goodbyes two weeks after the business with Missy/The Master/The Mistress and the Cybermen.

While Clara wanted to kill Missy herself after she had to bid farewell to Cyber-Danny, Cyber-Brigadier blasted her and received the salute he always wanted from the Doctor. It was “a moment that is sure to bring a tear to any classic Doctor Who fan’s eye,” according to Entertainment Weekly. Watch an inside look from BBC America about the return of the Master and Cybermen below.

When Danny chose to use the one trip home on the bracelet the Doctor gave him to send the boy he killed back, Clara was faced with a future without him. When the Doctor finally responded to her call, he assumed that Danny had used the bracelet himself and so he told Clara that Missy had given him the correct coordinates for Gallifrey so that the couple could be happy together. Clara let him believe that lie, and they parted with a hug. The Doctor revealed why he doesn’t like hugs – “Never trust a hug. It’s just a way to hide your face.” – and EW called it “appropriate” since both had “devastating secrets” that showed on their faces.

As the Inquisitr previously reported, Nick Frost made an appearance as Santa Claus in “Death In Heaven” in the middle of the credits to let the Doctor know what everyone already knew: this can’t be the end for the Doctor and Clara.

We need to get this sorted, and quickly. She’s not all right, you know, and neither are you.”

While Clara is not seen in the Christmas special teaser, which you can watch below, Radio Times has noted that she is in the cast list, and so there’s no reason to think that the Doctor Who season 8 finale is the last time that Jenna Coleman will appear. However, the site also suggested that she could appear “in a limited capacity” and also raised the possibility that she could be pregnant.

In the episode, “Listen” from earlier in the season, we did witness the Doctor and Clara meet Orson Pink, the splitting image of Danny with stories about his great-grandparents who time-traveled. He also had Danny’s toy soldier, which he called a family heirloom. Either Orson is no longer going to exist, which is what EW has suggested, or Clara is already pregnant. This could also explain why rumors of Coleman exiting might be true if they don’t want to have a pregnant companion on board the TARDIS.

Doctor Who season 8 may be over, but the series will be back on BBC America with the Christmas special.
