Obama On Net Neutrality: The President Fights For Our Rights [Video]

Net neutrality has been one of the most hotly debated topics which affects everyone using the internet. It ensures that you don’t need to pay an additional fee to access YouTube or other video streaming sites just to eliminate that annoying “buffering” problem. All websites are equal under this banner, whether it’s the website for Joe’s Bar and Grill, Walmart’s online store, Blip, or the Inquisitr.

FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler has allegedly been attempting to eliminate it so ISPs such as Verizon and Comcast can charge us an additional fee to access all sites at the same speed. John Oliver explained on his HBO show, Last Week Tonight, that Wheeler is doing this because he is also a lobbyist opposing that very right.

President Obama has taken to recording a speech on how Tom Wheeler’s decision could change everything, and details why the concept is something to fight for.

“Simply put: No service should be stuck in a ‘slow lane’ because it does not pay a fee. That kind of gatekeeping would undermine the level playing field essential to the Internet’s growth.

“I believe the FCC should create a new set of rules protecting net neutrality and ensuring that neither the cable company nor the phone company will be able to act as a gatekeeper, restricting what you can do or see online.”

FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler has been allegedly ignoring the plights of internet users (4 million, according to the video) across the United States, and as Obama pointed out, his decision could save or destroy the internet.

Others have claimed that the throttling practices that Comcast, AT&T, and Verizon have all been accused of are a violation of the constitution’s first amendment, the right to free speech. Obama believes ISPs should be regulated more like a public utility, not throttled because you can’t pay extra.

What do you think of President Obama’s speech on net neutrality and his fight to keep FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler accountable?
