If You Think Your Cat Can Jump, Wait Until You See These Champion Jumping Cats

If you have a cat or have spent much time around cats, you know that they are world champion jumpers. You’ve probably seen your cat make it from the floor to your desk or onto the kitchen counter in one leap. And when you consider that most kitties are only about a foot off the ground, that would be like a human being jumping to the top of a four-story building.

This video, put together by BuzzFeed in cooperation with the folks at America’s Funniest Home Videos — who specialize in this sort of thing — highlights 41 of the most remarkable, or in many cases, just bizarre cat jumps you’ll ever see.

Check out the little guy at the 0:58 mark especially. Pretty funny — or just frightening?

So how high can cats jump? A normal cat can jump up six times his own body length. That’s truly amazing, especially when you consider that dogs can jump only one body length straight up.

And people, well, we’re just about the lamest jumpers in nature. We’re lucky if we can get 18 inches off the ground.

Cats are built for speed. They don’t normally run long distances, but in short bursts a plain old house cat can hit 30 mph. And that same explosive musculature is what gives kitties the ability to seemingly launch themselves into flight.

Cats have flexible spines, and some of the strongest back and leg muscles in the animal kingdom, which allow a cat to coil his muscles like a spring, then blast all of that stored force into a leap that will take a cat, well, just about anywhere.

Of course, things don’t always work out the way the cat plans as this hilarious cat jumping video proves.
