Ted Cruz Giddy After Election Night: ‘There Will Finally Be Oversight’

Few people had as good a 2014 Election night as Ted Cruz, and the Texas Senator wasn’t even on the ballot. Cruz has long been the voice of the Tea Party in the United States Senate and with the control of the Senate now in the hands of the Republicans, Ted Cruz is going to have quite a bit more power. Not that having control of Congress was something that Ted Cruz needed in order to go against President Obama.

Appearing positively giddy on Fox News shortly after it was announced Republicans had gained the needed 51 seats to take control, Ted Cruz talked about how there were going to be a number of investigations of the Obama administration in the coming years.

“I think we’re going to see, with a Republican majority, finally meaningful oversight of the Obama administration from the U.S. Senate. For six years, Harry Reid has been President Obama’s most important protector. He’s shut down the Senate. There’s been essentially no oversight. I hope we begin serious, systematic, sober hearings, examining executive abuse, regulatory abuse, lawlessness, abuse of power. Whether it is IRS wrongly targeting citizens or the debacle of Benghazi and four Americans who lost their lives and why more was not done to save them, or whether it’s the lawlessness that pervaded Obamacare as the president and executive branch has tried to pick and choose which laws to follow. I hope we see serious oversight on those fronts.”

Ted Cruz was one of the first Republican politicos to make it clear that while there has been a lot of talk from others about finally governing, Ted wants to make sure things are painful for the White House first and foremost. This has long been an issue with Ted Cruz. The potential Presidential candidate has done some things that show he believes in governing. As the Daily Beast pointed out, Ted Cruz recently emphasized the military sexual-assault bill and anti-Hamas legislation he had worked on with Democratic Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand during a recent interview.

Despite his ability to work across the aisle on very specific issues, Ted Cruz appears to still be the face of “the opposition” when it comes to dealings between Congress and the White House. While others on his side are talking about a reconciliation of sorts, it doesn’t appear the Texas Senator, who is still relatively new to Washington, has those same aspirations. Whatever his plans, Ted Cruz is unofficially in the driver’s seat now.
