Benedict Cumberbatch Announces Engagement To Sophie Hunter

Benedict Cumberbatch, 38, broke the hearts of women all over the world with the announcement of his engagement to Sophie Hunter, 36.

Cumberbatch’s parents chose a traditional way to break the news to the world by announcing it on the Forthcoming Marriages section of The Times.

“Mr BT Cumberbatch and Miss S.I. Hunter: The engagement is announced between Benedict, son of Wanda and Timothy Cumberbatch of London, and Sophie, daughter of Katharine Hunter of Edinburgh and Charles Hunter of London.”

Engagement Announcement

The traditional announcement is typical of the couple who have managed to keep their relationship low-key. It was only confirmed that they were together when they attended the French Open in June, their first appearance as a couple since they met in 2009, according to BBC News.

Last month, there were reports that Cumberbatch traveled to Edinburgh to meet with Hunter’s mother and ask for her daughter’s hand in marriage.

In an interview last year, Cumberbatch described his ideal girlfriend as someone who has conversation skills and as sense of humor. It seems that he has found those qualities in Hunter.

Cumberbatch’s rep confirmed the announcement to the Mirror and said, “I am delighted to confirm this morning’s announcement that Benedict Cumberbatch and Sophie Hunger are engaged.”

Marriage has always been in Cumberbatch’s mind, as he said in an interview last year.

“It’s a wonderful thing to get married young and become a father. I used to think that I’d get married by my mid-thirties and have children.”

Cumberbatch rose to worldwide fame for playing the titular character on BBC’s Sherlock. He has performed in film, radio, and theater. In 2014, Cumberbatch was named one of the “Most Influential People in the World” by TIME magazine.

Hunter, an Oxford graduate, is an actress and theater director. She played the role of Annabel Blythe-Smith in the 2009 thriller Burlesque Fairytales alongside Cumberbatch, who played the role of Henry Clark.

Some of Cumberbatch’s fans were delighted to hear the news and showed their support. However, others were devastated to hear that their idol will be off the bachelor list.
