ABC Airs ‘Scandal’ Sex Scene After Charlie Brown Halloween Special, Parents Television Council Wants Apology

Last Thursday night, ABC made a rather unfortunate programming choice by airing Scandal, which opened with a steamy sex scene, immediately after It’s The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown, and now a TV watchdog group wants an apology.

According to The Washington Post, Charlie Brown‘s last scene was at 8:59 P.M. (Eastern Time). 26 seconds later, the next images to hit the screen were of Scandal‘s Olivia Pope having a sex dream, with plenty of bare skin to be seen.

Television watchdog group Parents Television Council was not amused.

“Shame on ABC for putting a peep show next to a playground. In less than 26 seconds we were taken from the Peanuts pumpkin patch to a steamy Scandal sex scene. Twenty-six seconds, boom. Unless parents had the remote control in their hand, thumb on the button and aimed directly at the TV screen, they didn’t have a chance. Such a transition is grossly irresponsible by the network and entirely unfair for parents. ABC owes families an apology.”

The Parents Television Council, which, according to their website, “is a non-partisan education organization advocating responsible entertainment… it was founded in 1995 to ensure that children are not constantly assaulted by sex, violence and profanity on television and in other media,” fails to grasp the concept of DVR’s, the Pause button, and a host of other features that can parents can utilize nowadays to control what their kids see on TV.

The event got noticed on Twitter, too, although probably not in the way that the Parents Television Council had hoped. Mostly, the event was met with amusement rather than rage, according to HNGN. Twitter user brought the Charlie Brown/Scandal scheduling kefuffle to the attention of Scandal’s creator, Shonda Rhimes, via a tweet that she herself re-tweeted.

Although at least one parent who took to Twitter seemed to be genuinely upset about the whole thing.

This is not the first time the Parents Television Council (PTC) has gotten outraged about what airs on TV; earlier this year, according to this Inquisitr report, PTC president Tim Winter took exception to a rape joke planned for an episode of Family Guy that hadn’t aired yet, and demanded that Fox remove it.

As of this post, ABC has not commented on the Charlie Brown/Scandal… scandal.
