Oregon Mom Kills 6-Year-Old Son Throwing Him Off Bridge Into Yaquina Bay

Jillian Meredith McCabe, 34, of Seal Rock, Oregon called the police late Monday in Newport, Oregon to report that she had thrown her 6-year-old son, London, off a bridge — killing him.

Newport Police Chief Mark Miranda revealed that the mother called 911 around 6:30 p.m. on Monday evening, “saying she threw her child over the side (of the Yaquina Bay Bridge),” as reported by Fox 8.

While officers detained McCabe, an extensive search began for her son, London. The search included two Coast Guard vessels, a helicopter, local fire departments as well as first responders, as revealed by NBC. Police Chief Miranda describes the grim situation.

“The water of Yaquina Bay is more than 100 feet below the bridge. Chances of survival from a fall that high were “minimal.” Even if a person survived the fall, one could only survive the frigid water for about 20 minutes.”

At 10:20 p.m., about four hours after McCabe called 911, her son’s body was found.

According to NBC, Jonathan Klingberg, a spokesman for the Coast Guard revealed that “a good Samaritan had called in after spotting a body from a restaurant and lounge at the Yaquina Bay Bridge, prompting the Coast Guard’s 25-foot vessel and fire department to zero in on the location.” He continued to tell NBC about the recovery of London.

“The fire department got there first and recovered the body. It’s absolutely a tragedy.”

Jillian McCabe’s mugshot was posted on NBC station KGW. Authorities were able to match her photo to one posted on a social media blog named, “Autistic London” in which Jillian was making an appeal for money.

According to NBC, in the blog, Jillian McCabe described herself as a “stay-at-home mom for her autistic son” living in Hood River, Oregon. She reveals that her husband, Matt, was diagnosed with MS, and has a mass in his brain stem. Jillian goes on to say that in a matter of two weeks time, Matt went from “the sole breadwinner and provider to not,” per NBC.

The blog, which has been deleted, described an incident in which Jillian had to rush Matt to the hospital, London in tow, and how the medical staff raved about London’s good behavior stating they found it hard to believe that he was autistic.

While Matt was in the hospital, Jillian was using Matt’s Facebook account to update Matt’s friends on his status. Jillian posted a photo of London in his dad’s hospital room.

Jillian made a comment on Facebook regarding the picture above.

“Matt’s getting tons of rest, London was perfect and slept the whole night… Matt really wants to see London and sleeps at every opportunity. London mostly just chills with his i pad on the sofa. The staff has encouraged London to see Matt and loved that we stayed the night. Good stuff.”

With regards to the “Autistic London” blog, it seems as though Jillian McCabe is at the end of her rope as she is asking for help as revealed by NBC.

“I am taking care of our son London and now Matt full-time. I am applying for any and all assistance available… I NEED YOUR HELP. I love my husband and he has taken care of myself and my son for years and years and now it’s time for me to take the helm. I am scared and I am reaching out. I hope I am not coming across trashy or over-reactionary. I must explore every avenue to take care of my family right now.”

Not long after Jillian posted this plea for help in the blog, Matt informed their blog readers that Jillian had moved out of their family home, according to NBC.

“Some of you ‘know’ and some of you don’t. Jillian and I are living apart right now. Life happens. We are still ‘together’ but living apart. This has been very difficult, but life is unique, right?”

However, according to NBC, in September, that changed and they were living together yet again, and that made London very happy.

“London is pleased as punch. He lays on our laps and puts our hands together. Last night he made the ‘mmmwha!’ sound and gave his Mommy a kiss. Then he made the same sound and pushed our faces together. He’s all smiles.”

Jillian McCabe has been arrested for aggravated murder, murder and 1st degree manslaughter, according to police. Bail was set at $750,000.
