WWE News: WWE Superstar Rey Mysterio Backstage At ‘WWE RAW’ Taping, Set To Return Soon?
WWE Superstar Rey Mysterio has been gone from WWE programming for months. The former WWE World Heavyweight Champion has been hurt a lot in his WWE career. Due to his previous injury, WWE was able to renew Mysterio’s deal without his clearance. Rey wants to leave and pretty much retire from wrestling to focus on other things. However, he has been unable to do this due to WWE continuing to renew his deal which they have a right to do if a talent misses significant time.
Rey has been gone from WWE since around WrestleMania time. He competed in the Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal, but took time off after.
Many felt that Rey would simply stay out until his contract with WWE expired, then just leave under the radar. However, there was some speculation that he wanted to return to finish out his current deal, yet WWE had nothing for him creatively. Rey would rather retire than go back, but since he has to be under the deal…he might as well get as much out of it as possible. This is why it is interesting that Rey Mysterio was backstage at the recent WWE RAW taping in Buffalo, New York.
As we know, he was not used on TV. Neither were The Ascension, who were also backstage at the event.
However, it appears that Rey was there to discuss potential plans on returning. Creative is currently working on ideas to reintroduce him as a regular VERY soon. While many do not think it is a guarantee that Mysterio will return to WWE programming, there is a good indication that he will since he met with WWE for the first time in months. Mysterio was last seen backstage at a recent Lucha Underground TV taping in Los Angeles with his son Dominic.
Rey is very burnt out, and he pretty much just wants time away. However, Mysterio’s current deal expires next year. So he could simply work out his contract and then leave WWE afterward. Unlike CM Punk who simply walked out, never to return again, Mysterio has not been in TV for some time.
Sources claim that Mysterio wants to act in Mexico and do a lot of other non-wrestling projects that he simply cannot do while under a WWE contract.
One source noted that “Mysterio has been doing this for over 20 years, and between the injuries and mental burn out, he has no interest in AAA, Lucha Underground, or re-upping with WWE.”
That being said, Rey may certainly be back to WWE soon to work out the remainder of his deal. However, he will not be re-signing with WWE after this. Rey could always help out at AAA and Lucha Underground on the side, very part-time, but he will certainly not go to another place full-time. Just like Punk, Mysterio does not want to find himself in yet another long-term wrestling deal that his body cannot handle right now. The good part is at least we get to see the master of the 619 before he calls it quits.
