Next Sonic title won’t be like Sonic Generations

For many Sonic fans, Sonic Generations is exactly what they have been wanting for the past several years. It had classic Sonic gameplay, classic Sonic levels, and even modern Sonic gameplay to change things up a bit.

Considering that Sonic Generations has been well received by fans and critics alike, you would think that Sonic Team would want to stick with what works. They are sticking to what works, apparently, but don’t expect the next Sonic title to be like Generations.

Speaking to Gamasutra, Takashi Iizuka said that he wanted to create something “new” for Sonic in 2012 and beyond, rather than going along the path that Sonic Generations started. He considered what was done with Sonic Generations a good representation of classic Sonic, but that isn’t necessarily what they’re going to be going with for the next Sonic title.

“There have been a lot of Sonic titles in the past, and I think, at this point, there’s a pretty good idea of what a Sonic game should be like — a fun, frenetic action game,” he said. “As I said, I feel the need to surprise the fans in new and innovative ways, but I don’t want to do anything to depart from that style. The color powers in Colors are a good example of that.”
