Halloween Costumes 2014: Frozen’s Elsa Most Popular, Ebola-Themed Unpopular, And Adults Beware What You Wear To Work

So there’s this little animated film called Frozen that came out awhile back and, since then, it has never looked back.

Whether you’re talking Oscars, Golden Globes, Kids’ Choice Awards or highest grossing films of all time, Frozen has you in the conversation.

But now you can one-up your fellow Halloween party goers with an additional piece of delicious Halloween trivia: Frozen’s Elsa is the trendiest, coolest, most popular and “hottest” Halloween costume of 2014, according to Forbes, topping a list that includes several other highly competitive characters with cinematic connections.

According to Forbes, this year’s hottest Halloween costumes favor more “wholesome” choices such as Frozen’s Elsa, rather than the tasteless costumes that inevitably show up every Halloween and are like teachers during a fire-drill: no class! Among these no-class costumes this Halloween are Ebola-inspired Halloween costumes which are reportedly selling like Halloween is already over — which is pretty much not at all.

But Disney’s animated Frozen mega-star, the sweet and fearless Elsa, has by far been the most sought out costume online, according to the E-commerce site, search specialists SLI Systems.

Starting September 1 and following through October 26, SLI tracked over 80 million searches spanning 17 websites that sold Halloween costumes. The Halloween costume outlets included stores with a particular focus on Halloween, party-specific stores and the big box retail chains.

From their results, SLI culled the top 15 most-searched for Halloween costumes of 2014 and (spooky Halloween drum roll please) here they are!

1. Frozen – 1,192,000 (along with Elsa, Olaf and other Frozen characters were also in the mix)
2. Zombie – 863,000
3. Ninja – 863,000
4. Pirate – 796,000
5. Clown – 659,000
6. Witch – 588,000
7. Vampire – 565,000
8. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles – 536,000
9. Book of Life – 308,000
10. Flapper – 277,000
11. Batman – 251,000
12. Despicable Me – 233,000
13. Maleficent – 227,000
14. Monster High – 206,000
15. Star Wars – 148,000

So if you or your child are going with Maleficent or a Wookie for Halloween, you might be a bit more original, but you’ll likely be outnumbered by Elsa and other Frozen characters.

As for the Ebola costumes and other unsavory Halloween ideas, Forbes hit up SLI’s chief marketing officer, Tim Callan, for some insight.

“Certainly, Ebola has been in the news the entire time we measured (Halloween costume searches). My intuition is that the majority of these searches were actually for costumes for kids.”

And Mr. Callan is likely correct in his analysis. But many adults dress up in Halloween costumes also and along with avoiding over the top tasteless get-ups like an Ebola costume, adults also need to adhere to certain social guidelines, particularly if wearing a Halloween costume to work, reports U.S. News & World Report.

Among the costume faux-pas to avoid when mixing Halloween with your livelihood: Don’t wear anything too sexually provocative. Don’t attempt any potentially racist or ethnicity-themed costumes. And don’t wear some kind of mask or zipper-mouth that makes it impossible to speak with clients or co-workers.

Better yet, just go as Elsa or one of the other Frozen characters, first making sure you’re not stealing the idea from your boss, of course.
