‘Reign’ Recap: ‘The Lamb And The Slaughter’ Sparks Jealousy And Heartbreak [Spoilers]

Reign broke hearts all around during Thursday night’s new episode, and we have all the details! That being said, for those of you who have it saved to watch later, avert your eyes, because there are major spoilers ahead!

The CW’s hit show has packed in quiet a lot of drama in the past few episodes, and mind you, we are only four episodes into the second season! So far, in Season 2 of the hit period drama, we’ve seen the Black Plague bring France to its knees, the beginning of a country-wide famine, the rising of spirits, possession, the claiming of the new King’s illegitimate child, and the friendship between Mary Queen of Scotts, also now Queen of France, and one of her closes ladies almost fall to ruins. All of this within the first three episodes, so of course fans would expect nothing less from episode four, appropriately titled “The Lamb and the Slaughter.”

Thursday’s episode of Reign began in the forest, dealing with the possibility of supernatural forces. A Shepard claims to have been attacked and propositioned by three cloaked men on horseback. Bash and Conde – a friend of the crown – go to confront the Shepard, who claims that the three riders wanted his soul in exchange for the protection of his family. The Shepard claims to have refused the riders, though we later find out that he was marked by the men anyways with the “Mark of the Riders,” which is believed to have driven the Shepard mad, which lead to him murdering his wife and children.

The topic of the supernatural plays a small part in episode four, which stands to reason considering the castle is busy preparing for the official christening of Lola and Francis’ child. For the first time in a long time, fans get to see a different, friendlier side of Catherine as she plans the elaborate event, even though Lola and Francis want to keep it small. After so many of Catherine’s comments about her “bastard” child, she decides to pick a fight with Mary, according to Entertainment Weekly.

Mary had been overly supportive towards her friend Lola, even though the child in question was fathered by Francis, her husband. Lola questions Mary about whether or not she’s ever been truly angry with Lola for the night she spent with Francis, and after so many questions, Mary finally snaps. The two part ways, but before long, they make up, as friends should, and Lola asks Mary if she would be her child’s Godmother, to which Mary accepts.

Of course, this isn’t the only relationship problem going on within the castle. Fans get another healthy dose of Lord Narcisse, after he shows up at the castle to introduce his new bride Estelle, one of the women who helped Lola through her childbirth, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Estelle approaches Lola, begging her to help her free herself from Lord Narcisse, after she heard rumors of the deaths regarding his previous wives. Lola decides to take it upon herself to help her friend, which only results in tragedy.

Then we have Mary’s other friend, Greer, who is trying to win back Lord Castleroy. After sharing an accidental dance with her old flame Leith, she realizes that she needs Lord Castleroy and wants to explore what may be between them, besides a marriage that would help her family.

Despite all the doom and gloom throughout the episode, Mary reveals that after some time of trying, she is finally pregnant with a child of her own! The happy news is short lived though because on the day of Lola’s child’s christening, Mary is struck with abdominal pains, and before long realizes that she has lost the baby. She keeps it a secret from everyone besides Conde, who she swears to secrecy so that the christening goes off without a hitch. The episode ends as Mary finally reveals to Francis that she’s had a miscarriage, and fans are left heartbroken.

For a one hour episode, that is quite a lot to take in! Did you catch last night’s episode of Reign? If so, tell us what you thought of it all!
