New Middle Earth Safety Video From Air New Zealand Is Full Of Epic Fun

Whether you’re journeying to New Zealand to see the sights from Peter Jackson’s Middle Earth films, (those being the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit trilogies), traveling there in spite of them or even if you’ve been living under a hobbit hole and never heard of them, you’re about to get a treat if you’re flying on Air New Zealand.

Recently, Peter Jackson, Elijah Wood and some other notables from New Zealand and the Middle Earth films joined forces to put out the “most epic safety video ever” for Air New Zealand.

The video starts with two Middle Earth fans sprinting to their gate in an airport terminal. They make it just in time, move into the plane and sit down. Looking over, they see Elijah Wood sitting in the next row. Wood acknowledges them, and the two Middle Earth fans quietly freak out.

The safety video starts, and the Middle Earth fans are both transported into the shire of Middle Earth itself.

A female elf appears and speaks to the camera.

“Welcome to Middle Earth, my friend. I am here to guide you on your journey. So cease your rabble rousing, and listen very carefully.”

The elf then informs you to obey your crew members and to heed all lighted safety signs.

Dean O’Gorman, who plays Fili the dwarf in The Hobbit, appears on a horse. Though he’s in a saddle, he’s wearing a seatbelt and demonstrates how to get it on and off. Sylvester McCoy, who plays Radagast in The Hobbit films, appears and explains how the plane’s oxygen masks work, (while a seated orc pulls a mask over his head).

It’s not only Middle Earth stars that get in on the fun. New Zealand writer and director Taika Waititi appears in Gandalf garb flying a great eagle. One of the Middle Earth fans is in an airplane seat behind him on the eagle’s back. From this position, Waititi talks about how to position your head and arms in the event of a crash.

An orc army with torches demonstrates how to follow the lights to the nearest exit. At the end of the video, Peter Jackson leans in, yelling, “Cut! It’s time to stow all electronic devices.”

Elijah Wood and Jackson are given the last few lines. First up is Wood, standing in front of a hobbit hole.

“Thank you for embarking upon your journey with Air New Zealand. May your path always be guided by the light of the stars. And may the future bestow upon you all the happiness and adventure our Middle Earth has to offer.”

After Wood puts on a magic ring and disappears, Jackson sticks his head into the frame.

“That’s a wrap, everyone. I hope you enjoyed it.”

According to The Daily Mail, this is the second airline safety video featuring Middle Earth.
