Britney Spears’ Manager Reminisces About The VMA’s Kiss Seen Round The World

Britney Spears and Madonna set the Internet ablaze 11 years ago when the two performers engaged in a rather sensuous kiss. Britney and Madonna were sharing the stage at the VMA Award Show in 2003 when Spears leaned over to her older counterpart and locked lips. After the two ended their kiss, Madonna turned to the other singer on stage, Christina Aguilera and smooched her as well.

The kiss was memorable enough that those who saw it can probably bring up the memory in their minds simply by reading the description. Spears, Madonna and Aguilera shocked those in attendance and shocked those watching at home even more. 11 years later, Britney’s manager Larry Rudolph recently sat down with Billboard magazine and talked about that fateful night. While some people thought Britney and Madonna had clearly rehearsed the moment a number of times, Rudolph says that isn’t true.

The manager does say that Madonna was quite rigid with her rehearsals with Britney Spears but there was never any kind of tip-off that the singers were going to engage in a lip-lock. Rudolph says that Madonna certainly respected Britney but it didn’t appear the veteran performer even knew his name.” She was telling Britney and [me] every day, ‘Be here tomorrow at 10 o’clock,’ ” he told Billboard. “She would never address me by name; she would just say, ‘You make sure Britney’s here tomorrow at 10 o’clock.’

Rudolph talked about what happened after Spears and Madonna had their moment by saying “the kiss happened and then the world exploded.” Spears’ manager clearly doesn’t see the event as something that hurt anything, and it certainly didn’t hurt notoriety for his client or anyone else that was onstage. Britney was already plenty famous when the trio performed at that year’s VMAs, but it’s safe to say Spears might have vaulted into another stratosphere with that smooch.

Spears’ manager had a good time reaping the benefits of that moment and he also enjoyed the immediate aftermath. It turned out that Madonna had know the manager’s name all along. When the pair ran into each other in an elevator after the show, Rudolph says she “wrapped her arms around my waist and gave me a big kiss on the lips,” he remembered. “And she said, ‘You see, Larry, it was all worth it.'” No one knows for sure whether Britney Spears agrees that it was all worth it, but she’s never complained about the moment either.
