James Gunn Says He Started Writing ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy 2’ Three Months Ago

Work on the Guardians of the Galaxy sequel has already begun, according to Guardians director James Gunn, who revealed recently that the Galaxy sequel will bring new characters and explore some mysteries the first one left unsolved.

James Gunn spoke on Tuesday at Variety’s Entertainment & Technology Summit, and the Guardians of the Galaxy director seemed to be itching to spill details on the sequel to this summer’s smash hit space opera. Foremost among those secrets was the fact that Gunn has already begun writing the Guardians sequel. In fact, Gunn’s been working on Guardians of the Galaxy 2 for almost three months.

“I spent all day on August 1, the day the first movie was released, writing Guardians 2,” Gunn said. “I was so excited about it and I was finally able to let go of the last one and begin the second one. I always saw this as a universe, not just as one story.”

That’s all terrific, of course, as it means a lower likelihood that Guardians of the Galaxy 2 will see big delays due to the script. We’ve known for a while now that Guardians was getting a sequel, at least since the film opened in August to critical and financial success. What we still don’t exactly know, though, is just what we can look forward to for Guardians 2.

Rumors have been circulating since September that the next Guardians movie will feature more female characters, but Gunn wasn’t giving away anything pro or con on that front. What he did reveal is that the five original Guardians of the Galaxy will be back for the second go ’round.

Variety also noted that Gunn said fans “may see the team adding new members,” and that the new Guardians will “uncover some secrets posed in the first [Guardians movie].”

What kind of secrets? Most likely we’re going to get a look at Star-Lord’s father, and some are speculating that that will lead to the introduction of Adam Warlock. We could also get some more background on Gamora, and it’s likely that we’ll see a further exploration of Rocket Raccoon’s past.

Of course, the big question is how Guardians 2 might lead to a tie-in with Marvel’s most successful franchise, the Avengers. With Avengers: Age of Ultron set to hit theaters next summer, word is that Marvel’s big plan is to bring together the two properties in the team-up to beat all team-ups.

In the mean time, though, Guardians fans can look forward to the release of the Guardians of the Galaxy DVD near the end of next month. That release will come in two options: the regular version and a steelbook option made to look like Star-Lord’s Walkman with Awesome Mix Vol. 1 inserted.

And speaking of the Awesome Mix, the bestselling Guardians of the Galaxy soundtrack will actually be released on cassette tape between November 17 and December 31. It will be the first cassette released by Disney/Hollywood Records in more than a decade. However, we already know that, while the music might be great, the tape itself is bound to suck.
