The baseball hall of fame will celebrates it’s 75th anniversary in 2014 and in celebration of that monumental occasion the U.S. Mint has been authorized to create commemorative coins.

The Secretary of the Treasury this week provided the mint with permission to issue no more than 50,000 $5 gold coins, 400,000 $1 silver coins and 750,000 half dollar coins for a one year period starting on Jan. 1, 2015.

The bill to mint the coins must still pass Senate approval and then be signed by President Barack Obama, however given the “national” status of baseball in the United States it will likely gain quick approval.

Speaking about the coin Hall of Fame President Jeff Idelson told the Saratogian:

“The National Baseball Hall of Fame Commemorative Coin Act unites every fan of the game in celebrating the timelessness of America’s pastime.” Idelson continued, “The Coin Act will connect every generation in commemorating the impact Cooperstown has had on the national landscape, honoring our baseball heroes while educating future generations on the historical significance of the game and its lore.”

The baseball hall of fame has become a national landmark of sorts since opening its doors in 1939, since that time more than 15 million people have visited the building which houses items from baseballs greatest players including Babe Ruth, Mickey Mantel, Roger Maris and others.
