CM Punk Vs. Brock Lesnar At WrestleMania 31? Yes, If This Veteran Has His Way

CM Punk vs. Brock Lesnar may seem as likely as a final Hulk Hogan championship run at this point, but for one veteran of the wrestling business, it’s quite possibly the perfect main event for WrestleMania 31.

On a recent episode of The Ross Report, host and legendary wrestling commentator Jim Ross posed the intriguing possibility to listeners.

“You’ve got to wonder who WWE is going to have ready to challenge Lesnar at WrestleMania 31. It’s got to be somebody fresh and somebody who can be perceived by the paying public to have a chance at beating Lesnar,” Ross said.

For Ross, the current WWE roster isn’t cutting it, noting that there is a “short list of candidates” who could beat Lesnar “in a pro wrestling environment. Will someone on the roster be developed, and will it be far enough along by WrestleMania 31 to get the job done?”

Could WWE make peace with CM Punk, Ross thinks, he could be the guy.

“Have CM Punk return after the first of the year when he should be well-rested and feeling good and his battery’s recharged and have Lesnar meet Punk to headline WrestleMania 31. You got that Paul Heyman element in there because CM Punk says on TV, ‘I’m a Paul Heyman guy.’… And now you’ve got Brock Lesnar who is obviously a Paul Heyman guy… it makes for an interesting story if it were to happen.”

Unfortunately, that’s a pretty big “if” at this point, a fact Ross conceded on his podcast, due to CM Punk’s dislike for the backstage politics.

From a Brock Lesnar standpoint, it’s likely he wouldn’t have a problem dropping the belt to Punk. While the Beast Incarnate is an animal in the ring, and he’s enjoyed a measure of success in UFC, he gets the pro wrestling business, and he’s done jobs for the company before.

With Lesnar’s contract expiring shortly after WrestleMania and no new contract in sight, it’s pretty much a given at this point that he’ll have to drop the belt to whomever he faces on the Biggest Stage of Them All.

The X-factor is Punk. Would he be willing to come back to the company provided he gets the win over Lesnar and he doesn’t have to drop the title to John Cena at the next pay-per-view?
