Hudson volcano stirs up, Chile evacuates residents

Chile’s government said on Wednesday that it’s evacuating around 100 residents within 25 miles of the Hudson volcano after the volcano began to stir up.

On Wednesday, the Hudson volcano began to show signs of a possible imminent eruption after it rocketed a jet of steam roughly half a mile into the air. Seismic activity related to the volcano also began to pick up on Wednesday, one of which caused an avalanche in the area.

“We can’t rule out that this volcanic activity could increase in the coming hours and produce an eruption,” said Interior Minister Rodrigo Hinzpeter.

If the Hudson volcano erupts, and officials believe it is possible that it will, it will be one of a string of volcanoes to erupt over the past several years in Chile, the government said. A volcano erupted in June of this year, which followed an eruption of the long-dormant Chaiten volcano in 2008.

The Hudson volcano is part of one of about 2,000 volcanoes in Chile. The last time the Hudson volcano erupted was in August of 1991. It caused millions in damages, mostly to local farms.
