Meghan Trainor Says Fame Is A Lot Like High School

Meghan Trainor has enjoyed quite a bit of success this year thanks to the popularity of her undeniably catchy hit single “All About That Bass.”

Although no one really paid much attention to Trainor prior to 2014, she certainly turned those tables around over the summer. Trying to escape the aforementioned song was tough, especially if you’re the sort of individual who is susceptible to earworms. Even this writer found himself humming the tune from time to time.

During her chat with Entertainment Weekly, Meghan Trainor discussed the fame and fortune she’s enjoyed in recent days. While it’s definitely something she’s still getting used to, the singer admitted that the experience is kind of like high school. For some of us, that doesn’t sound particularly alluring. As you can imagine, fame does have its downside.

“The worst is probably that anyone can say anything they want about you. It’s like high school but HUGE. But all you have to do is NOT read the comments. My brother is so cute. He’ll tell me, ‘This person just threw out the c word!’ And I’m like, ‘Don’t tell me that! Talk to Mom about it.’ I actually saw one comment this morning that was like, ‘Meghan Trainor, just tie me down and do dirty things to me, because I love you.’ And I was like, ‘Whoa, okaaaaay.’ It was intense.”

Trainor learned that fame also means people will pay way too much attention to what you have to say during interviews. After her recent chat with Billboard, Meghan found herself awash in controversy about her stance on feminism made the rounds. In short: She doesn’t consider herself a member of that particular club.

“I don’t consider myself a feminist, but I’m down for my first opportunity to say something to the world to be so meaningful. If you asked me, ‘What do you want to say?’ it would be, ‘Love yourself more.'”

Not surprisingly, Entertainment Weekly was quick to ask about thoughts on feminism. As you can tell from her response, it’s not a subject she’s altogether comfortable discussing.

“I’m so scared of this question! I don’t like being labeled anything. I’m 20, and I don’t know a lot of stuff. I just know songwriting. Of course I agree with women’s rights and women’s causes. All my songs are like, ‘Gimme that title, treat me right.’ But I’m just so young, and I don’t want to say the wrong thing. I’ll figure it out, though. Like Taylor Swift—she went back and forth, and now she knows exactly what’s up. I’ve never met her, but I covered her song [‘Shake It Off’]. I hope she heard that.”
