Kendrick Lamar’s Latest Single Is Incredibly ‘Positive,’ Says Ab-Soul
Kendrick Lamar has released one of the most positive songs the rap world has seen in quite some time. That is, according to Ab-Soul.
Instead of giving the world another misogynistic, violent, or depraved tune to blast from their car stereos, Lamar decide to put together something a bit more upbeat. The song, aptly-titled “i,” implores folks to increase their self-love. In a world populated with tracks about absolutely nothing, Kendrick’s endeavor is certainly a breath of fresh air.
Vibe reports that one person who thoroughly enjoys the fruits of Kendrick Lamar’s musical labors is Ab-Soul. The hip-hop artist recently told the publication that he really appreciates the positive message Lamar is attempting to spread with his new track.
“[I]t’s probably like the most positive song that I’ve heard in a long time. Self-empowering. ‘Cause you gotta think, when you’re an artist and you’re performing and you’re saying these words – he’s saying ‘I love myself,’ right? So, if you know the words, you’re gonna say ‘I love myself’ too. So, he’s like making you love yourself. You get that, just on the surface level. The song is ‘I love myself.’ So if you’re gonna go to his show and sing along with him, you’re gonna be telling yourself that you love yourself. That’s when you’re taking responsibility for what you’re saying. You got kids listening. It’s people that’s going through things that’s listening. You can use these words to lift ’em up.”
Of course, Kendrick Lamar isn’t the only recording artist with a positive message to sell these days. According to AllHipHop, Ab-Soul is promoting his latest effort, These Days. In fact, Lamar’s song “i” does a pretty good job of paraphrasing Soul’s trip to the studio.
“”He summed up my whole album in that song. He probably wasn’t even aware of it.”
When Kendrick Lamar began putting the highly-anticipated follow-up to his acclaimed album good kid, m.A.A.d. city, he didn’t listen to anything recorded over the past several years. The Inquisitr previously reported that Lamar doesn’t get inspired by the sort of stuff people are cranking out these days.
“I’m definitely a studio rat. I can go in the booth and do it all day, every day. Sometimes I go into the studio and study music. Just sit in there and vibe out to music that’s not really of the — Marvin Gaye or something like that… I haven’t been listening to a lot of the music that’s out right now. You can get influenced by it.”
