A list of popular Halloween costumes for 2014 was recently unveiled by Google, and there’s one pretty big surprise near the bottom of the top ten list.
According to Mashable, Google Trends data miners revealed that Queen Elsa Halloween costumes are being searched for the most this year. This shouldn’t come as much of a shock — this is the first Halloween since Disney’s Frozen was released last November, so some young fans of the film have been waiting for almost a year to dress up like the ice queen.
Interestingly, Elsa’s sister Anna isn’t the second most popular Halloween costume on the list. That honor goes to her adorable snowman sidekick Olaf. The character is so popular that sexy Olaf Halloween costumes actually exist.
Disney gave Sleeping Beauty baddie Maleficent a live-action movie makeover this year and casting Angelina Jolie as the redeemed villain was a move that might make the House of Mouse a lot of moolah in official Maleficent costume sales. The horned villainess came in third on the list.
The rest of the popular Halloween costumes list is as follows; Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Anna from Frozen, Black Widow from The Avengers, Captain America from The Avengers, Groot from Guardians of the Galaxy, Dog Spider, and Assassin’s Creed.
You’ll notice that all of the popular Halloween costumes are movie characters except for two: Assassin’s Creed, which is a video game, and the Dog Spider.
According to TIME, the “Dog Spider” is a cute critter that appears in a viral YouTube video created by prankster SA Wardega. Wardega dressed up a small dog in a scary-looking spider costume and tricked unsuspecting victims into thinking that they were being chased by a giant mutant spider. He also used elaborate props like dismembered limbs and spider webs to make the ruse even more terrifying. The “Mutant Giant Spider Dog” YouTube video has over 100 million views.
Unfortunately, Google Trends didn’t reveal if people searching for Dog Spider costumes are planning on dressing their pets up like the viral video star or if they’re planning on dressing up like Dog Spiders themselves. This look would be easy enough to achieve by combining a spider costume and a dog costume.
You could also try a twist on the costume by dressing your dog up like Spiderman or combining a Spiderman costume and a dog costume.
BBC News did an update on the original Spider Dog, Chica, and it turns out that being a YouTube celebrity is dangerous — her paws were in casts after getting her claws stuck in an elevator during an interview. Slywester Wardega told BBC News that he uses Chica to pull pranks on unsuspecting victims because “Polish people are too sad,” and he just wants to make them smile more (and scream more). Luckily for Wardega, it looks like Dog Spider Halloween costumes are going to be making a lot of people smile this October.
