New Samsung Wi-Fi Device Could Bring Even Faster Internet Than Ever

In 2015 we could see Samsung Wi-Fi device standards set to rival cable internet and 4G networks. Imagine streaming Netflix in high definition while one gamer in the family is downloading the latest Assassin’s Creed to their PlayStation 4, another gamer is playing StarCraft II … and nobody gets any lag.

The question now remains whether Samsung will be creating its own ISP to handle the 60GHz bandwidth of up to 575MB per second. Consumption at that rate could easily push your internet charges into the stars if you’re using providers like Verizon and AT&T. Even Comcast would probably take advantage and charge a premium that only the rich can afford.

The FCC could also make these providers very nervous if the new Samsung Wi-Fi devices create the next standard for internet usage. Broadband could become the new mid-range speed as super-high-speed access takes over.

This won’t come without potential problems on the technical side, of course. In order to achieve the signal speed in question, the signal strength tends to lose range. If the device isn’t within line of sight, the signal will bounce off of walls and other solid obstacles and quickly lose speed. Samsung claims that an adaptable antenna which enables the waves to be converted into beams could solve the bounce problem.

The 802.11ad technology is up to five times faster than current Wi-Fi broadband standards, so bandwidth choking won’t be as much of an issue. If someone in the household tends to engage in online piracy and downloads movies, games, or music in bulk, the problem could still exist, but others in the household won’t suffer as much with a weak leftover bandwidth.

Remember that online piracy is a crime and punishable by severe fines and prison time, so don’t do it.

The South Korea-based technology company could easily change internet standards as early as next year. Company head Kim Chang Yong is excited about the possibilities of the Samsung Wi-Fi device.

“Samsung has successfully overcome the barriers to the commercialization of 60GHz millimeter-wave band Wi-Fi technology and looks forward to commercializing this breakthrough technology.”

There is still the problem of internet service providers and what could be astronomical data fees, unless Samsung decides to become their own provider and put current internet giants to shame with low-cost plans.

Can Samsung overcome the challenges involved and make their Samsung Wi-Fi device the new standard everybody else struggles to compete with?
