‘Super Smash Bros.’ GameCube Controller Adapter Denies Other Wii U Titles, Nintendo Sorry

The Super Smash Bros. GameCube controller adapter for Wii U won’t work with any other Wii U titles or controllers. For that, Nintendo apologizes.

Another possible low point for the console that almost killed Nintendo appears to be a device which will only work with one specific game and controller. While some gamers might consider this a positive, having clamored to use the familiar controller with Nintendo’s flagship fighter, others could be seeing little more than an extra cost for just that one title.

The Wii U has been failing to meet Nintendo’s sales expectations ever since it was released, and it was mostly due to poor marketing. Nintendo emphasized the game pad’s screen, and made it look like little more than a tablet gaming console. In a market dominated by Microsoft and Sony consoles, as well as regular releases of Apple’s mobile devices, that was an ill-fated move.

It took the release of the bestselling Mario Kart 8, which ultimately proved it could outperform most of the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 library, to boost Nintendo’s console as a justifiable purchase.

When the Wii U Super Smash Bros. GameCube controller adapter was announced, the fans were once again excited for a Wii U title. Updated visuals and the use of a classic controller promised a return of the brawls we had missed for so long.

Sadly, the adapter only works with the Wii U title it was made for, contradicting what Nintendo stated in an earlier promotion, that it would be “compatible with all games supported by the Wii U Pro Controller.”

After realizing their error, Nintendo removed that line about the Super Smash Bros. GameCube controller adapter, and gave Video Gamer a formal apology.

“The GameCube Controller Adapter for Wii U is compatible with Wii U and ‘Super Smash Bros.’ for Wii U specifically – it is not compatible with any other Wii U software.

“The adapter is also not compatible with Wii and we [apologize] for any confusion.”

It had been previously reported by IGN that the adapter would work with any Wii U title which supports the Wii Classic Controller, Wii Classic Controller Pro, and Wii U Pro Controller. The report was false.

If this fact doesn’t bother you, the adapter will be made available by the Holidays, with the U.K. price set at 17.99 pounds. It will also be sold in a bundle with the game for 54.99 pounds. It will allow up to four players to join in on the same TV for some classic four-player mayhem.

How do you feel about the Super Smash Bros. GameCube controller adapter not working with other controllers or games?
