‘Mean Girls’ Appreciation Day: Twitter Goes Nuts For October 3!

In case you didn’t know October 3 is officially Mean Girls Appreciation Day. So how did this happen exactly and who decided that today was the day the internet would celebrate Mean Girls? Well, it wasn’t TBS, which is usually the network where you can find the film airing every other weekend. The theory is that it was started with a fan page on Facebook, and it snowballed from there.

Does it matter that Mean Girls came out ten years ago? Not really, because the film has managed to transcend generations with its relevant themes of school bullying, and writer Tina Fey’s witty zingers. Every day you can hear teens and 20-somethings that were teens when the film first came out, quoting some of the lines said by Lindsay Lohan, Daniel Franzese, Lacey Chabert, Rachel McAdams, Lizzy Caplan and Tina Fey herself.

The date isn’t lost on Mean Girls fanatics as October 3 is a direct reference to Cady Heron’s (Lindsay Lohan) budding crush on the side swept bangs beauty Aaron Samuels (Jonathan Bennett). In one scene, their “love affair” begins when Regina George’s ex asks Cady what day it is — which was one of their first of many hilarious interactions throughout the film.

Cady narrates, “On October 3, he asked me what day it was.” To that Cady replied in the scene, “It’s October 3.”
