Actress Sues Amazon for Exposing Her Age on IMDB

A US actress, known as “Jane Doe,” is suing Amazon for $1 million alleging fraud, breach of contract and violation of her private life.

The actress of Asian descent changed her name to make it more American and maximize her chances of getting into film roles. The suit added that she never wanted her age known as well but that Amazon revealed her age on the film industry site Internet Movie Database (IMDB) based on details from her credit card. IMDB is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Amazon.

The actress has been a member of the IMDB since 2003. In 2008, she upgraded her account to IMDBPro, a paid service that required her to submit credit card details.

The lawsuit further stated:

“Shortly after subscribing to IMDbPro, plaintiff noticed that her legal date of birth had been added to her public acting profile in the Internet Movie Database, revealing to the public that plaintiff is many years older than she looks. In the entertainment industry, youth is king. If one is perceived to be ‘over-the-hill,’ i.e., approaching 40, it is nearly impossible for an up-and-coming actress, such as the plaintiff, to get work.”

The lawsuit contends that the actress has suffered substantial decrease in acting credits, employment opportunities and earnings.

The actress has asked the United States District Court Western District of Washington to mask her identity because of the nature of her case.

Is this the reason why it’s rude to ask a woman her age?
