Yvette Nicole Brown Quits ‘Community,’ Possibly Killing The Show

Yvette Nicole Brown is leaving the hit series Community, according to Entertainment Weekly.

After spending five seasons playing the role of the beloved Christian mother with a short fuse, Shirley Bennett, Yvette Nicole Brown has made the decision to not return for Season 6.

According to the report confirmed by Sony TV, Yvette Nicole Brown made this hard decision to leave the cast due to her father’s poor health and her strong desire to be there for him in his time of need.

“My dad needs daily care and he needs me. The idea of being away 16 hours a day for five months, I couldn’t do it. It was a difficult decision for me to make, but I had to choose my dad.”

Fortunately, Yvette Nicole Brown is not leaving on bad terms with anyone in the cast or crew. The studio actually granted her a huge favor by allowing her to leave in the first place, especially since she was already under contract for the sixth season. In her statement, Yvette Nicole Brown did not hesitate to show her appreciation for this extraordinary act of kindness.

“I can’t say enough how much I respect Sony and Dan for how they handled this profound change in my life.”

Yvette also used her official Twitter page to share kind words and thoughts about her departure, in addition to reaching out to quite a few cast mates and crew members along the way.

The problem with Yvette Nicole Brown leaving the cast of Community is that it further increases the chances of the show’s transition to Yahoo! becoming a major disappointment and inevitable failure. Keep in mind that Community was picked up by Yahoo! after NBC decided to cancel the series. However, it’s not like Yahoo! was able to pick up the series in it’s prime — such as when it still had each member of its original cast (including fan favorites Chevy Chase and Donald Glover.)

Those two actors had already taken their leave from the show for one reason or another when it was still on NBC. Without the popular characters, Pierce and Troy, returning to Greendale College, Community literally needed to keep every other person they had left in order to have a fighting chance. Even though she is leaving the show on good terms, Yvette Nicole Brown is still leaving the show — which means that Shirley has to leave right along with her. Loyal fans of the show have posted their disappointment with this news on Twitter, even presenting ideas that could possibly allow Shirley to remain at Greendale (sorta) while still working with Yvette Nicole Brown at the same time.

As for right now, the show is will still begin shooting as originally scheduled without any foreseen delays. Fans of Yvette Nicole Brown in general will still enjoy seeing her on the small screen in the next few months — especially with her recurring role in the highly-anticipated reboot of The Odd Couple.

When it comes to Community, even with the new roles that have been added to the cast for the new season, Yvette Nicole Brown may just have inadvertently pulled the plug on the show yet again — whether Yahoo! wants to admit it or not. What do you think?
