Samsung Galaxy S5 Falls Shorts In Durability Tests Against Apple iPhone 6

The Samsung Galaxy S5 is one of the most popular and powerful smartphones on the planet. While that is usually good news for a company, the bad news is a new test has found it falls a bit short in the durability arena when it comes to withstanding abuse compared to Apple’s new offerings.

A new study by SquareTrade shows that both the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus are more durable than the Samsung Galaxy S5. The company also took a look at the iPhone 5S, and it turns out the iPhone 6’s are sturdier than quite a few other phones currently out on the market. In order to arrive at its conclusions, SquareTrade took a number of different factors into account, including weight, size, quality of the rear and front panels, and grip.

The sturdiness of the newest iterations of the iPhone have actually come under quite a bit of question since they were officially released, thanks to claims they were bending in users’ pockets. It turns out the instances of the devices actually bending were greatly exaggerated. Apple claims there are less than 10 reports of the phones actually bending. All of this is bad news for the Samsung Galaxy S5, of course, since the company could have tried to seize on the lack of durability of the Cupertino company’s new product.

This is why SquareTrade’s tests can still be seen as being reliable despite claims to the contrary. In order to carry out the tests, the company used robots, with the intention being the tests would be quite a bit more consistent. Tests taken to sort out the most durable of the bunch included dropping them from a high elevation and sliding them on their backs to see how far they would go.

When the smoke had cleared on the many tests, it turns out the iPhone 6 is the most durable of the group. The iPhone 6 Plus appears to not actually be all that durable, especially when dropped from as little as four feet. While the glass didn’t break, the screen did detach from the frame in some cases. Despite that, the iPhone 6 Plus and the iPhone 5S were both graded out as more durable than the Android offering. In fact, the Google OS-powered phone actually did quite poorly. SquareTrade says the Samsung Galaxy S5 finished fourth among the four smartphones, earning a grade of just 6.5.
