Study Links Vitamin E Supplements To Increased Chance Of Prostate Cancer

A recent study has linked the use of vitamin E supplements to an increased risk of developing prostate cancer.

Researchers examined 35,000 men who were 50-years and older and found that men who used vitamin E supplements and then abandoned those supplements still faced a higher risk of contracting the disease.

Subjects took supplements or placebo drugs for an average of five and a half years and then stopped taking the supplements in 2008. As of July 2011 17% more cases of prostate caner were found in Vitamin E users compared to the placebo group.

The study also found that 91 cases of cancer developed after the men quit taking the vitamins.

At this time researchers are not sure what is causing the results with one scientist noting:

“We don’t really understand what the optimal levels of most of the vitamins are.”

Interestingly enough over the last several days I have reported on the dangers associated with taking vitamin supplements including a directly link to early death in women users and one study that linked negative health effects to men and women who take vitamin and mineral supplements.
