Prince William Gives Health Update On Duchess Kate During Malta Trip

The Duchess of Cambridge may be early on in her pregnancy, but the event has already garnered worldwide attention. Although Duchess Kate and Prince William may have wanted to keep their news under wraps a little while longer, the royal’s experience with severe morning sickness may have necessitated the announcement.

As a result of that morning sickness, Duchess Kate had to cancel her appearance in Malta this weekend. It was set to be Kate’s first official solo trip, coming on the anniversary of the nation’s independence. People in Malta certainly should not have been disappointed, however, since they were treated to an appearance by Kate’s husband, Prince William.

The Los Angeles Times quoted the palace’s official statement on the matter, which pointed to the recommendation of doctors as the reason for Duchess Kate’s cancellation.

“Her Royal Highness continues to suffer from the effects of Hyperemesis Gravidarum. The decision not to visit was taken by the Duke and Duchess on the advice of the Duchess’s doctors.”

Upon meeting with the president of Malta, Marie Louise Coleiro Preca, Prince William conveyed his wife’s disappointment at her inability to attend. He said she was “so-so” as reported by Us Weekly.

“Unfortunately you have me. She’s very disappointed she couldn’t be here today.”

During his official visit, dignitaries from Malta gifted Prince William with items for his son, including a Maltese cross, a teddy bear and ball. He was also given a designer handbag from a Maltese designer to bring home to Kate.

The heir to the throne expressed gratitude at the outpouring of good wishes for his family when he spoke with locals.

“I’m sorry Catherine couldn’t be here. She’s doing a little bit better, thanks. George has grown up a lot. He’s a strong boy!”

The president also conveyed her positive sentiments about the royal family and Britain on behalf of the nation of Malta, as reported by The Mirror.

“We respect the British Royal Family. We consider the British people as our friends, not simply our ex-colonisers so we consider the royal family as friends of Malta. [Kate is] doing well obviously in the circumstances. I also told his royal highness that we look forward to welcoming all his family including baby George and including the new baby.”

Prince George, Kate and William’s first child, was born in July 2013 and recently celebrated his first birthday. Recent reports claim the royal couple may have plans for even more children.
