Apple’s SIRI System Is Nearly A Swear Word In Japan

Siri for iPhone 4S

When Apple presented their iPhone 4S they chose to name their new revolutionary voice assistant program “Siri” which in English is fine but in Japanese it means something a little bit dirty.

The word “Shiri” in Japanese is slang for “ass” and apparently the name used by Apple sounds close enough to have upset some Japanese buyers, after all who want’s to buy an “ass voice assistant”

Funny enough when Japanese users took to Google Japan to search for the new technology rather than finding “Siri” in their searches they were receiving a bunch of pages about “ass.”

Given that Apple owns a third of the Japanese smartphone market it’s likely that they will change the Siri name in that market to allow for better searching and less confusion.

So there you have it, adult jokes on behalf of Apple, so much for a squeaky clean image.

Revolutionary? Have you been hiding under a rock? Android has had full featured voice-input for a long time now.
